You said it. On top of it these analyses even in these generic equations they make it so simple (like editors of the newspapers having solution to everything) that it looks like zero sum game. No one bothers that 44% did not cast their vote. When these techniques were introduced in Indian elections (I remember Prannay Roy (now of NDTV) introducing these concepts on Doordarshan - I think it was some time in late 1980's) but I agree these days they cover only 4 - 5 variables. Swing, Caste, Region .... I think it is time to add more number of variables in these equations, giving a fresh look.
